Last year, Motorola announced they were the first phone manufacturer to digitalize Nheengatu, an endangered indigenous language from the Amazon. Recently, the Lenovo-Motorola globalization team worked on the next stage of indigenous language revitalization program for North America, celebrating UNESCO’s decade of indigenous languages. We will describe technical challenges and processes used to digitize a language into CLDR and UNICODE and develop keyboard compatibility for the first time. Additional details will be shared on the complexities of working with geographically remote communities lacking technology access as well as the rewarding experiences when working toward the survival of a language and engaging with indigenous communities.
Takeaways: Attendees will learn technical challenges and processes used to digitize an endangered language into CLDR and UNICODE, including keyboard compatibility for the first time; the complexities of working with remote indigenous communities lacking technology access; and the rewarding experiences when working toward the survival of a language and engaging with indigenous communities.
