Alon Lavie is currently a senior manager at Amazon, where he leads and manages the Amazon machine translation research and development team in Pittsburgh, PA. His team is responsible for core and applied research contributions to Amazon’s neural machine translation technology, and for the development of machine translation (MT) models and systems that are used by a broad range of Amazon internal teams as well as by external Amazon Web Services customers via the Amazon Translate MT service. Prior to joining Amazon, Alon was a cofounder of Safaba Translation Solutions, an MT technology startup, where he served the company as chairman of the board, president and chief technology officer. For almost 20 years Alon was a research professor at the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. His main research interests and activities focused on MT for high-resource language pairs as well as low-resource and minority languages. Additional interests include automatic metrics for MT evaluation and methods for multi-engine MT system combinations. Alon served as the president of the International Association for Machine Translation, president of the Association for Machine Translation in the Americas (AMTA) and was general chair of the AMTA 2010 and 2012 conferences. He is also a member of the Association for Computational Linguistics, where he was president of SIGParse. Alon holds a PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.
