Unlike the localization industry that was formed in the 1980’s, largely in North America and Europe, to support multinational companies as they exported software products worldwide, China’s language service industry has been taking its place at the intersection of the digital revolution and the country’s rapid economic growth, and has only been accelerating the past decade or so. During this panel we will discuss the unique challenges and opportunities that China’s language industry has in leading the wave of big translation in an era of artificial intelligence and big data. By examining real data and examples from the Shenzhen 100 initiative — a high profile research project backed by the Shenzhen government which analyzes local companies based on their level of global maturity — we will discuss how policies, regulations, talents and resources have been evolving and developing to support China’s journey to the world.
