The DITA XML standard recently celebrated its first decade, and in that time it changed the way many firms localize their technical content. A content strategy based on DITA makes localization more efficient and cost-effective, as reusable content not only ensures cheaper translation processes but also improves the quality of the content. We will explore several firms using DITA that have extensive localization requirements and will discuss the type of experiences and successes they have had implementing DITA for their translated technical communications.

Takeaways: The basics of DITA and structured content as it applies to localization processes; what a translator can expect when facing DITA XML content for the first time; and the business case for using this structured content standard in multilingual content environments.
